In this timely article we take a look at burnout at work to acknowledge International Stress Week. This year’s theme is Resilience. How do you as an employer protect your over achievers from exhaustion?
Who is most prone to burnout and what action do you need to take to prevent or help your personnel to recover from burnout?
One of the biggest impacts on workforce moral, productivity and profits is related to the key drivers in the organisation who are prone to what is termed burnout. Costly to the organisation financially, as well as to the organisational reputation and potentially catastrophic to the individual if not addressed.
Characteristically those most prone to burnout in the organisation are:
· Those instinctively driven to get amazing results.
· Individuals who set themselves a high standard with a tendency to over produce.
· People who rarely feel satisfied that they have done their best.
· Generally the creative thinkers and implementers in an organisation.
Those high achievers that I have worked with in my role as a Motivational Mindset coach possess impressive qualities: passion, enthusiasm and energy, highly sociable and have adrenalin producing interests like marathons, clubbing, extreme sports…they have a tendency to bring something distinctive and add to the culture of your organisation.
What Is Burnout?
Herbert J. Freudenberger a German-born American psychologist originally defined burnout as “the extinction of motivation or incentive, especially where one’s devotion to a cause or relationship fails to produce the desired results.”
Burnout can be compounded with:
· Radical organisational change like major reorganisation.
· Prolonged poor leadership.
· Isolation due to living and working abroad and away from home.
All of the above carry an element of perceived remoteness; meaning the individual, believes it is up to them to shoulder the responsibility attempting to manage everything. By nature perfectionists and highly motivated ( adrenalin seeking) personalities, who assume accountability far beyond their original role and tasks.
Burn-out, can mean people fail to function effectively and if not recognised and caught in time can lead to mental problems in some cases death by suicide. For some people experiencing burnout- the crippling feeling of de-motivation, feelings of inadequacy, the imposter syndrome, emotional and physical meltdown can act as a wake-up call.
How to Protect Your Overachievers From Burnout
Burnout?Mental wellbeing is not a trend it’s a fundamental human right. Take care of your people and they will take care of your business” Peter Cheese’s, Chief Exec CIPD 2019″
Organisations are legally bound to provide a health and wellbeing policy. To ensure there is adequate provision of care in order to prevent this from happening, train and inform staff to recognise the signs. It affects the professional functioning of any employer’s long term engagement.
A growing number of organisations have mental health first aiders. Engage the services of an experienced coach to offer professional stress and resilience coaching across the organisation or to work with individuals.
An Employers responsibility to their people is not simply a tick-box exercise where one size fits all. Evidence recommends a blended mix of ‘health’ and ‘well-being’ services as the most effective practice to address the problem of mental health and the continued well-being of your people.
